Before you do The Thing, do the Groundwork.
A guided experience that helps you get clear on what you’re building, who it’s for, and why it matters – before you invest in bringing it to life.
The premise
Great marketing starts with Groundwork. In all the excitement of building something new, it’s tempting to jump straight to the fun stuff. The branding. The website. The launch campaign. The shiny new social accounts.
But there’s an important step that often gets skipped: making sure the ideas underneath it all are strong enough to build on. Who exactly are you trying to reach? Why should they care? What makes your offering different? And what do you actually need your marketing to accomplish?
Whether you’re launching something new, bringing an idea to market, or reimagining an existing brand, these questions deserve attention before you start spending serious time and money. Because even the most beautiful brand can’t make up for a shaky foundation. That’s where Groundwork comes in.
The method
Less business school. More pretend play. Forget the marketing jargon and endless worksheets. Groundwork takes a different approach to brand strategy: guided visualization.
Instead of asking you to write a mission statement or define your unique value proposition, Groundwork invites you to explore your idea through a series of thoughtfully crafted scenarios.
You’ll imagine specific moments, people, places, conversations, and outcomes. You’ll reflect on what you see, what you feel, and what surprises you along the way. You imagine. You reflect. You respond. Groundwork does the translating.
Your responses become the raw material for a strategic interpretation that reveals the purpose, audience, positioning, and personality of your brand, along with the tensions, assumptions, and opportunities you might not have noticed on your own. It’s serious strategic thinking, just without the usual strategy homework.
Who Groundwork is for
Groundwork isn’t for one type of person; founders, designers, consultants, and even therapists benefit from going through the process.
It’s for the individual who is about to put real money, time, energy, or reputation behind their idea, and who needs clarity before they start spending to bring it to life.
If you are building a business, launching a service, developing a brand, planning a website, creating an event, starting a podcast, or testing a new offer, then Groundwork is for you. It is especially useful before you hire a designer, copywriter, developer, agency, strategist, or other collaborator who could use a shared language as you kick off your project.

Behind the curtain

Wondering who’s behind Groundwork? That’s me, Bex. I spent more than a decade behind the scenes in Hollywood shaping campaigns, partnerships and ideas designed to make people pay attention, from giant billboards on Sunset Blvd. and Times Square to ongoing coverage in the city’s most-read publications.
That work taught me how to find the story, sharpen the positioning and figure out what actually needs to happen next. Today, through Bex Productions, I bring that same instinct to founders, experts and organizations ready to invest in their brand and marketing.
I created Groundwork after seeing how often people were investing serious time and money in websites, logos, campaigns, and creative partners before they’d really interrogated the ideas underneath them. They were building the house before checking the foundation. And I kept thinking: Surely there’s a more interesting way to do this.
Groundwork is my answer. It uses guided imagination and strategic reflection to get the vision out of your head and onto the page, where we can examine it, challenge it, and turn it into something useful. Part creative exploration. Part strategic interrogation. All in service of helping you make more thoughtful decisions about what comes next.
The goal is simple: protect your time, your budget, and your reputation by doing the thinking that matters before making the investments that count.
Because great marketing is only as strong as the Groundwork beneath it.
